Clear Expectations

Read Jeremiah 11:1 through 12:17

Published: Jul 24, 2017

“Now, Michael,” said his mother, “I want you to clean your room before you go outside to play.” After his mother closed the door, the six-year-old shoved everything into his closet and went outside to join his friends. When he returned, he was scolded for not cleaning his room properly. What was the problem? He didn’t understand his mother’s expectations.

“Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant—the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the iron-smelting furnace.’ I said, ‘Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God’” (Jeremiah 11:3–4).

God made His expectations clear to the people of Israel. He left no wiggle room for misunderstanding. If the people obeyed God, then they would enjoy His benefits. If they failed to obey, then they could expect serious consequences.

Thought for Today: The cost for disobedience is always too high a price to pay.
